John Warren Hanks (1918- ) was born in Stratton, Nebraska. He graduated from Antioch College in 1941 with a degree in Social Sciences. He served as a conscientious objector during World War II in various posts including a youth counselor at the Cheltenham School for Boys (a segregated, African-American reform school) near Washington, D.C. At the end of the war Hanks went to the University of Chicago and graduated with an M.A. in Psychiatric Social Work. He worked as a psychiatric social worker u...
